Build or Buy Holley for Big Block Street engine

Postby 80427 » Mon Aug 02, 2021 3:37 pm

I am slowly piecing a 520 big block together for my ice cream cruising chevelle. The plan is for a mildish build that will run for idle to 5500+/-. Because I want it to look stock under the hood I am sticking with a 4150. I have been looking at BLP unassembled kits and I have been looking at a new HP 950 Classic from Holley. I prefer the gold holley look.
I was told previously the new holley carbs have problems, is this still true?
I have never started from scratch with a carb so installing boosters in a 4150 etc is a bit daunting (can I have BLP install them for me?).

I did convert a 750 dominator to 1050 with a booster change and it runs very good so I am just a little ham fisted.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Now that I looked at the BLP BLP BX4 BILLET BUILDER KITS you can have them install the boosters. Still not sure which way to go.

Would you go BLP unassembled vs a New HP Classic? What is the deal with Hp950s do they flow 950cfm? Do they flow less than 850s? Is the BLP 950cfm billet kit different than a HP950, the specs appear very similar for the 850 and 950.

sorry the HP 950 Classic is list number 0-80496-1. I am assuming I will be going with a 850 or 950 BLP unassembled kit. Is the 950 the same as holley's 950 with the 750 body and 850 baseplate?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the holley 950 is a 1 3/8" venturi (750) with a 1 3/4" baseplate. I have read the 950 flow test was at 28" instead of the normal 20.4"water making it inflated advertising numbers. Can anyone comment on this. Not saying it's not a good carb though

I would recommend Woodruff Carburetor Specialist for a period correct looking carburetor that is live engine tested and may cost less than a BLP kit.

Mark, that is awesome. What body and boosters are those? That is likely overkill for a lower rpm BBC. We discussed you building me a carb once but I thought you pushed me to build my own. Probably because I am too poor and you were too busy.

My buddy that runs the chassis dyno hates vac sec because they always seem to have a lean sag/hessitation as the secondaries open that needs a big pump shot to cover. You apparently don't have this problem.

Gary Williams has a video for vacuum secondary on the street. He says it applies the power smoother on street tires, I think.
