Re-plating and coloring

On a standard Holley I leave them in. Don't see any reason for removing them since that would require cutting them out and replacing. I get the odd carb holley that has one or two slightly loose boosters ( usually down leg boosters ). I have found that when I am glass beading them the booster will tighten up. ( kind of like shot peening I guess ) So I can even straighten the booster first if needed. One time I had to slightly peen the booster where they are swaged in and after media blasting was virtually undetectable.

Have not restored any Demon carbs yet. Some of those have removable boosters ( correct? ) Does yours?

After a bit of research I plan on attempting black chromate conversion on the Demon carby body and bowls that have had their finish partly removed. The black chromate chemicals are easy to obtain so I plan on:

1) home soda blast to remove any remaining factory coating
2) polish for a more gloss than matte finish
3) dip in black chromate as per instructions

Is this basically what needs doing?
Any critical steps missing from the very basic three listed above?

In an old article about Demon carbs it was mentioned they were finished in “silver die chromate” I couldn’t find what this is. Would they have been finished in blue chromate or clear? Are they one and the same?

Is the below race Demon and Claw possibly olive drab chromate or just a strong yellow chromate?
Sooo many color variations when you start taking notice.

All,

Sorry for rookie questions. I'm mostly interested in re-coloring the older zinc carbs. I see videos using Alumiprep 33 [phosphoric] followed by Alodine 1201. Is this a good recipe, or is there a better way?

Is coloring of the newer alum bodies any different?

Thanks.

Black chromate must be applied after zinc plating

Hey Mate,

How did you find the the caswell kit? I noticed their kit is only $80

Did you also use their products for the zinc coating?
