metering block plugs

A typical 3310 holley has steel plugs over the primary well that are inserted deeper than the brass plugs. My question is if you removed for cleaning can they be replaced with the standard brass plugs that don't go as deep. If you did what kind of consequences could occur?

They are likely brass, just dirty or oxidized. Standard 1/4" brass should fit fine.

if there's no tubes in those wells I would just use whatever I could get easily, steel or brass. I see vendors selling bags of the cup plugs on ebay.

I have removed them, and checking with a magnet confirmed they are steel ( 3/16" ). I have new brass plugs which are 1/4" ( larger ) so they won't fit deep into the well that has a step where the original ( steel ) plugs sat. So my question is . If I use the new brass plugs, they will be installed higher in the well ( almost surface mounted ) will that affect anything. Why were they originally factory installed deep. There is obviously no emulsion tube below these steel plugs.I have seen a lot of older holleys with with primary blocks this way

close inspection, are there any side channels opening into this well that might be blocked off if the plug is in a different position? if not I would just use whatever plug will fit good. is the steel plug 3/16?

As long as it doesn't open an idle tube emulsion passage in the metering blocks it should be fine with the top plugged.
